Top 5 Tricks for Writing Answers in IGNOU Exams
1. Note Down Important Questions
To find the important questions, first download exam papers, for both summer (June TEE) and winter (December TEE) sessions, for at least the past 05 years. Then download the assignments also, if possible. Now for each block, see how often a question was repeated from it, and see which blocks are never asked or asked once in 2-3 years. There may be around 4 such blocks that are sure to be questioned every time, and 2–3 such blocks that are included once every two or three years. These 2–3 blocks might have optional questions, with the remaining blocks.

2. Refer to IGNOU Books for Answers
Start your preparation thoroughly for the first 4 sure-shot blocks, then prepare the other 2–3 blocks (as mentioned in step 1) from the study material provided by IGNOU. No need to purchase additional material or books to pass TEE with good marks, as IGNOU study material has quality content. What matters is how well you have been through the study material and previous years’ question papers.
3. Revise Before Exams
You can also use your own words to provide a summary (a few sentences) in your notes or at the bottom of the page. Draw or doodle freely while studying if you are a visual learner to simplify long-term remembering. Once you’ve completed these steps, find someone who knows nothing about the subject and explain it to them as if they’re learning for the first time and you’re the teacher. It is difficult to forget information once you have done this, and it also forces you to clarify the topic and present it in the most concise and basic manner possible.
4. Learn the Art of Attempting Questions & Writing Answers
- After getting the answer sheet, try to draw a margin line (with a pencil/black pen) on the right side of all the pages. This will give a symmetry look to the answers you write and also provide the evaluator fair space to place the marks and total easily.
- Use two pens (blue & black). Write the question/answer number & headings of the answers with the black pen and the answers with the blue pen.
- Use a pencil/black pen to underline the words you want to highlight/emphasise.
- Start writing the next answer from a fresh (new) page.
- Try to divide your answers into parts (Introduction, Body, Headings under body, Conclusion) and underline important words/points to catch the evaluator’s eye. Write to-the-point, specific and correct answers.
- Take care of the length of the answers (for example, 50 words for 2 marks questions, 100-120 words for 5 marks questions, 250-300 words for 10 marks questions, 550-600 words for 20 marks questions, and so on).
5. Give Importance to Presenting Answers
As mentioned in the above step, give importance to presenting the answers to make your answer sheet different from the remaining students and increase the chance of getting the highest marks.
